Hanky Panky Bites
If you’ve never heard of Hanky Panky Bites, you probably aren’t from the Midwest!
This vintage appetizer originated in Ohio and quickly spread throughout the region thanks to its
irresistible combination of spicy sausage, melty cheese, and hearty rye bread. Whether this recipe
brings back memories from your mom’s old cookbook or you’re discovering it for the first time,
one thing is certain—these bites are always a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
1 lb ground hot sausage
1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
1 lb Velveeta cheese
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 (12 oz) package party rye or pumpernickel bread
How to Make Hanky Panky Bites
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the sausage and ground beef.
Cook while breaking into small pieces until fully browned. Drain off the grease.
Return the skillet to the stovetop over low heat. Add Worcestershire sauce,
oregano, garlic powder, and Velveeta cheese. Stir continuously until the cheese
melts and the mixture is completely combined.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the party rye or pumpernickel bread
slices in a single layer on a baking sheet.
Scoop about 2 tablespoons of the meat-and-cheese mixture onto each slice of bread.
Bake for 12–15 minutes or until the topping is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
Serve hot and enjoy! These bites are best straight from the oven.
